Storage Rings and Ion Sources
After the decommissioning of all accelerators at the end of 2012, the main effort of
the ion storage department is focussed on the realization of the CSR, in which heavy
molecular and highly charged ions will be investigated at extreme vacuum (10-14 mbar)
and a few Kelvin almost without disturbances by the environment. The former prototype
of the CSR, the cryogenic test facility CTF, is now under routine operation as an
experimental device for research at clusters and molecules.
In parallel we prepare in detail a possible move of the Test Storage Ring TSR to
support the REX-ISOLDE- Facility at CERN. In combination with the planned energy
upgrade of REX to HIE-ISOLDE a new focus in the investigation of nuclear reactions
will be performed.
