Obituary Dr. Robert von Hahn

"The temperature is set, the ring is running"- these were the words with which Robert always gleefully greeted us when he prepared the world's unique cryogenic storage ring CSR for the next measurement campaign. And even though these words may sound rather unintrusive to outsiders, to all those involved in the planning, construction and operation of the experiment, they were so much more. This simple statement sums up many years of hard work in this positive result, which would not have been possible without Robert. But above all, they were one thing: the expression that Robert drove this project forward not only with his knowledge, drive and inventiveness, but above all with his positive spirit and cheerful manner. His enthusiasm as well as his uncomplicated, friendly manner, but above all his wonderful friendship were an enrichment for all who knew him.

We will always remember Robert in this way. All the more we are saddened by his death, which was so completely unexpected.

Dr. Robert von Hahn was born on December 02, 1962 in Hofheim/Taunus. After studying physics, he received his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg in 1993. He then became a PostDoc at the MPI für Kernphysik and at BESSY in Berlin. In 1995, he accepted a staff scientist position at the MPI für Kernphysik in Heidelberg and spend several research stays at CERN where he contributed to the construction of the REX-ISOLDE post-accelerator. In 2005 Robert and his team started the construction of the CSR cryogenic storage ring, which became operational in 2016. Until his death, Robert was responsible for the excellent coordination of numerous measurement campaigns at the CSR. He left a deep impression both within the science of storage rings as well as within the physics community. He was a fascinating mentor, companion, and long-time friend. We will miss his always positive manner even in difficult situations, his friendly advice and great helpfulness. The CSR team and all staff members of the MPI für Kernphysik miss him very much.

Dear Robert, it was an honour and an even greater pleasure to know you and to work with you. Thank you for everything you have done for and with us - we will never forget you.
