LEGEND
The Large Enriched GErmanium Experiment for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (LEGEND) searches for a hypothetical radioactive decay of the isotope 76Ge that will exist if neutrinos are their own antiparticles. The first phase of the experiment uses the existing GERDA (germanium detector array) setup at the Italian underground Gran Sasso laboratory. Up to 200 kg of germanium detectors will be operated in a 64 m3 liquid argon bath. The expected sensitivity for the half lifetime of the decay is 1027 years for the first phase.
MPIK founded GERDA and the division Hinton is a major contributor to LEGEND, with main responsibilities in germanium detector production, mechanics and data acquisition.
