Title: Molecular-ion recombination with free electrons

Abstract

Dissociative recombination of molecular ions with electrons drives the chemistry in various types of low-energy plasmas, in particular in the interstellar medium. To understand the dynamics in these environments experimental data on recombination is needed. The Cryogenic Storage Ring, CSR, gives experimental access to unprecedented details on the complexity of molecular-ion recombination. In the talk the recent CSR studies will be reviewed.

Title: Dynamics and properties of cluster and molecular anions

Abstract

Polyatomic anions are important building blocks in condensed matter such as solids and solutions. Even their existence in space has been proven just a decade ago. Nevertheless, the nature and fundamental properties of isolated polyatomic anions in the gas phase are much less studied then their cationic counterparts. The interest in molecular anions is triggered by fundamental questions of molecular physics as well as many applications in chemistry, biology, and engineering. Cluster anions bridge the gap between small molecular-like systems and the bulk material with its characteristic features of magnetism, conductibility, and plasticity. In case of metal cluster this is accompanied by dramatic changes in the electronic structure from localized bonding to free electrons. The electron-electron correlation effects as a function of cluster size allow deep insight into the underlying physical mechanisms.The Cryogenic Storage Ring (CSR) located at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik is a perfect tool studying anions in their lowest rovibrational states. With a circumference of 35m constructed in a fully cryogenic environment this large-scale electrostatic storage device guarantees stable confinement of ion beams up to 300 keV ranging from small atoms and diatomic systems up to large biomolecules. It is perfectly suited for gas-phase experiments of various cluster and molecular systems in an extremely low blackbody radiation field. Experimental tools, recent results, and future perspectives will be presented and discussed.
