Physics with cold stored ion beams

Heidelberg, 12 – 14 June 2008

The Symposium will review recent physics and future perspectives at heavy ion storage rings, including the TSR at the MPI for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg starting operation in 1988, and at ion traps. Future perspectives include, among other projects, the cryogenic storage ring CSR and ion traps under construction at the MPI for Nuclear Physics, and the FAIR facility at GSI Darmstadt.

The main topic will be the study of atomic-scale quantum dynamics with cold stored highly charged ions, molecules and clusters. This opens up a wide range of studies, aiming at

  • fundamental processes and symmetries, such as electrodynamics, rare isotope studies and atomic mass measurements
  • cold resonant electron-ion collisions
  • internal excitations in molecular and cluster systems
  • applications in astrophysics and other areas of plasma physics.

Ion phase space cooling, long-time ion storage, ion diagnostics down to the single-particle level and internal state control offer a wealth of unique opportunities both for ion traps and ion beam storage rings.

This symposium focuses on the recent advances and new goals in science with cold stored ions and related instrumentation at the Max-Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg and in its scientific environment.
