Our division director Prof. Klaus Blaum has been elected by the Presidium of the Academy as a new member of the Physics Section of external Link the Leopoldina.
The Leopoldina external Link was founded 1652 in Schweinfurt and is permanently located in Halle/Saale, Germany, since 1878. It is the oldest continuously existing academy of natural sciences and medicine in the world. In 2008, the Leopoldina was appointed as the German National Academy of Sciences.
In its capacity as German National Academy of Sciences, the Leopoldina brings together the expertise of some 1,600 distinguished scientists to bear on questions of social and political relevance, publishing unbiased and timely scientific opinions. It represents the German scientific community in international committees and promotes a scientifically enlightened society.

The election to the Leopoldina is considered one of the highest scientific honors in Germany. New members are selected on the proposal from renowned members according to strict criteria of scientific excellence. We cordially congratulate Klaus Blaum on receiving this special scientific distinction.

The President of the Max Planck Society has appointed Prof. Dr. Almudena Arcones from the Technische Universität (TU) Darmstadt as a Max Planck Fellow at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik (MPIK) in Heidelberg.
One main area of her work is nucleosynthesis, the production of atomic nuclei - especially heavy ones. Within the framework of the Max Planck Fellowship, Almudena Arcones will lead the theoretical research group "Theoretical nuclear astrophysics and the origin of heavy elements in the universe" starting 1 March 2024, working closely with our "Stored and Cooled Ions" division.
