Title: Cooling of Rubidium ions by cold Rubidium atoms in a combined trap

Abstract

We present the observation of collisional cooling of Rb+ ions trapped in alinear Paul trap by a spatially overlapping dilute gas of cold Rb atoms ina Magneto-Optical Trap (MOT). The cooling mechanism is explainedtheoretically and substantiated with numerical simulations. We considerthe different collision channels and numerically demonstrate that theresonant charge exchange interaction greatly accelerates the ion coolingrate.
