Neutrino Oscillation Tomography - or - What Could One Learn About the
Earth's Interior from Neutrino Oscillations in Matter?
Earth matter effects are often being taken into account in the
calculation of long baseline energy spectra, since neutrino
oscillations can be quite substantially influenced by matter. One
interesting application is the inverse problem: Assume that we know
the neutrino mixing angles and mass squared differences quite well,
what can we learn about the Earth matter density profile from a single
baseline energy spectrum? We will especially apply this idea to two
problems: The reconstruction of the Earth's matter density profile and
the search for large cavities in the Earth's mantle.
