The Institute’s library presently holds about 25 000 monographs, book series, conference proceedings, theses prepared at the MPIK and about 5 000 journal volumes. It provides access to a number of e-books, online dictionaries, databases and more than 1 200 e-journals in physics. MPIK actively participates in the Max Planck Society’s open access activities with the Max Planck digital library. The publication management system PubMan offers the opportunity to publish papers and supplementary material and to prepare individual publication lists.

Information Technology

The central computer infrastructure provides computing power and storage space. A Linux cluster with more than 2500 processor cores is available for processing batch jobs. Data are stored on about 2000 hard disks with a capacity of about 4 Petabyte. For fast access, most of the data space is organized as a parallel file system. A central tape library is used as a backup system to assure data safety and as a long-term archive. All servers and file systems are attached to the network via Ethernet connections. The cluster mainly serves for data storage, data analysis and simulations in high-energy gamma-ray astronomy as well as for time-consuming calculations in theoretical quantum dynamics.

Further, the IT group operates mail and web servers and supports users with desktop hard- and software.

Public Relations and Media

The public outreach comprises writing press texts about research results of the Institute, servicing the Institute's web pages and producing handouts for both the external and internal communication. The team also provides guided tours for visitor groups and organizes public events of the MPIK. Further, the picture archive is maintained and support is offered for graphics processing and printing posters.
