Quantum Dynamics in Physics, Chemistry and Biology

Quantum mechanics is the underlying theory which describes the structure as well as the dynamics of matter. The International Max Planck Research School for Quantum Dynamics in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IMPRS-QD) is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics (MPIK), Heidelberg University, the  German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ), the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research (MPImF) (all in Heidelberg), and the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research (GSI) in Darmstadt.

From autumn 2007 onwards, the school offers excellent research opportunities in the fields of chemical, biomolecular, relativistic and ultra-short quantum dynamics, ultra-cold quantum matter, quantum information and quantum electrodynamics, supervised by leading experts in these disciplines.

The graduate students are trained in all aspects of quantum dynamics with special emphasis on the transition from simple to complex systems. The focus is on the common underlying quantum principles across the various fields, which is the basis of mutual understanding and cross fertilisation between the disciplines. Besides the introductory and advanced level lectures, regular seminars are held. The attendance of workshops and conferences provides the opportunity to PhD students to practice presentational skills and to present significant research results. With its multidisciplinary research and education programme, the school attracts talented and highly motivated students from all over the world.

PhD students who obtain funding by the IMPRS-QD in Physics shall also be members of the Heidelberg Graduate School for Physics.
