For Our Visitors
Here we present some information for those people visiting our MPI-K Dust Group.
Travel to Heidelberg
A very good overview of travel to MPI-K is found on our Institute's "How to reach the Institute" web page. Please look there first. Now, below are more details.
Frankfurt International Airport is the closest (approximately 80 kilometres -- 50 miles -- north of HD) and the most convenient airport for traveling to Heidelberg. There are several ways to get to Heidelberg from Frankfurt.
- Shuttle service is one convenient way to get to MPI-K. You can call ahead and have one waiting for you. It costs approximately 45-55 marks, but they will bring you directly to MPI-K or your hotel/motel. It picks up at the "Treffpunkt" or Meeting Place in either Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. Be sure to let them know your flight number and terminal at which you will arrive or from where you depart and your time of arrival/departure. You should call 2-3 days in advance to reserve the shuttle service. We use 1) Gertrud Worns Omnibus-Reisen; Telephone +49 6227 55955; Fax +49 6227 55061 or 2) TLS - Heidelberg; Tel +49 6221 770077; Fax +49 6221 770070. 49 is the German code. 6221 is the Heidelberg code (06221 from within Germany).
- The Train leaves directly from the airport. There is an intercity train that takes approximately 45 minutes. You may need to switch trains at the Frankfurt main station or at the Mannheim train station. Ask at the ticket booth. You will have to take a taxi from the Heidelberg main station to MPI-K (taxi costing approximately 20 DM).
- The Lufthansa Bus is available leaving from Terminal 1 outside Halle B (hall B), on the "arrival" level. It leaves approximately once an hour, depending on the time of day, seven days a week between 4am and 9pm, and it takes about 1 hour to travel to Heidelberg. Price is about 40 marks each way. It arrives in Heidelberg at the Mariott Hotel, which is located near the main Heidelberg train station.
- Driving takes a little over an hour and is approximately 90 KM (55 miles) to/from Heidelberg. From the airport go initially toward Frankfurt and watch for the signs to Basel and Karlsruhe. Turn south on Autobahn 5. About 30 KM south you will approach Darmstadt ("Darmstadterkreuz") where the autobahn divides into the 5 and 67. You can take either of these, but 5 is a bit further east and the more direct route. There are also typically more traffic jams there. Watch for the signs for Heidelberg. If you take the first Heidelberg exit you will come into town near the railway station.
Travel to MPI-K
MPI-K is located on a hill 20 minutes drive away from the Heidelberg town center. A search on your preferable map, for example Google maps, for the address: "Saupfercheckweg 1, Heidelberg", will put you at the right location.MPI-K is located next to EMBL (the European Molecular Biology Lab), so if your map does not show MPI-K clearly, then look for EMBL. When travelling by car, you can follow the road signs to either of these two facilities, but keep in mind that a gate is present between the two facilities that prevents cars from travelling between the two facilities (pedestrians can travel between the gate easily, however).
You can easily reach MPI-K :
- by car or
- the #21 bus. (Generally, the #21 bus to MPI-K runs every hour from Bismarckplatz. You can reach the Bismarckplatz from the main station by #5R tram or #11, #33, #41 and #42 bus.)
Meeting Rooms
Our group has access to two meeting rooms.
- Walter Bothe Laboratory, 2nd floor: "Kleiner Hoersaal meeting room". Bothe Lab. is the first large MPI-K building on the left nearest to the main MPI-K entrance. Walk up the stairs from the front entrance of Bothe Lab, and turn right.
- Wolfgang Gentner Laboratory, 2nd floor: "Seminar Room". Gentner Laboratory is the third building that you will pass on your left as you walk through the main MPI-K entrance. It is the building that our dust group is located in. Walk up the stairs to the 2nd floor and the seminar room is right at the stairs.
Heidelberg Hotels
Here is a list of Heidelberg Hotels, and here is another list.
Heidelberg Restaurants
We suggest:
Indian Palace: a medium-sized Indian restaurant in Old Town, close to Heiligeist Kirche, Kettengasse 11 Phone: 6221-60-07-10
Moghul Tandoori: another (we like Indian food!) medium-sized Indian restaurant, across the Neckar River from Bismarckplatz, Brueckenkopf 1/2 Str. Phone: 6221-474855
Dorfschenke: A simple restaurant with great food. Famous for Flammkuchen (a traditional dish coming from the Alsace region - most easily described as a square pizza without tomato - sounds strange but tastes great!) and a good selection of German cuisine. A little tricky to find. If you can find the Neuenheim Marktplatz, then you're very close. Lutherstr. 14, hidden down a back street in Neuenheim. Phone: 6221-419041
Cafe Rossi: A medium-large restaurant featuring Italian food, reasonably-priced, spacious and relaxed atmosphere, 1 minute walking from Bismarckplatz (a 15 min bus ride down the hill from MPI-K) Rohrbacher Strasse 04 Phone: 6221-9746-13
China Restaurant "Shanghai": A medium-large restaurant featuring Chinese food, very reasonably priced, rumor is that they have sushi (but one must call in advance one hour), 5 minutes walking from Bismarckplatz (a 15 min bus ride down the hill from MPI-K) Rohrbacher Strasse 6-8 Phone: 6221-24495
