Ion sources, accelerators and storage rings

For the research with fast ion beams, our division uses the accelerator facilities, which are operated by the MPIK. The heavy-ion storage ring TSR can be supplied with ions of nearly all elements (from 1H to 208Pb, but also molecular ions like CH+) to perform precision experiments in atomic, molecular and astrophysics. In the cryogenic storage ring CSR, which is already under construction as the succeeding experiment, also heavy molecular and highly charged atomic ions will be investigated at extreme vacuum (<10-15mbar) and a few Kelvin almost without any disturbances by the environment.
